The Sierra Leone U-20 coach, Mohamed Lamin Kamara is optimistic about his team’s performance in the AFCON U-20 competition in Egypt.
The Shooting Stars will play their first match against Zambia on Sunday afternoon at the Suez Canal Stadium. Sierra Leone is in a tough group with teams including the host Egypt, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.
“This is our first AFCON appearance, and we’re not just here to participate, but to make history,” head coach Mohamed Lamin said in his pre-match press conference on Saturday.
The Sierra Leone junior team is made up of mostly home-based players. Only foreign-based players from 26-man squad are with the Shooting Stars.
Sierra Leone is looking set history to qualify for the U20 World Cup if they make it to semis of the AFCON competition.
Their match against Zambia will be crucial for Shooting Stars aiming to use it as a stepping stone. “We have studied their play, identified weaknesses, and prepared strategies to counter them. We have nothing to lose,” Coach Kamara said.
The young Sierra Leonean team held their final training of Saturday evening as preparations for Sunday’s encounter which coincides with the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
