MARENGO, Ohio (WXIX) - A 31-year-old Ohio deputy sheriff was shot and killed in the line of duty on Memorial Day, according to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened as Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer responded to a domestic call shortly after 7:30 p.m. Monday at a home on County Road 26 in Marengo, which is about 35 miles northeast of Columbus, Morrow County Sheriff John L. Hinton said in social media posts Tuesday.

He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“The subject was also shot and was transported to a hospital in serious condition,” the sheriff wrote on the department’s Facebook page. “There are no words to express the pain being felt by our office.”

He began working at the sheriff’s office four years ago, on May 16, 2021.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) are investigating.

“My heart is torn by the loss of yet another Ohio law enforcement officer, who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community. We are forever indebted to those who lay down their lives for others,” Ohio Attorney General Yost said in a news release.

“I share in the anguish experienced by so many in this tight-knit community – my prayers are with Deputy Sherrer’s family, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and all who wear the badge.

“My thanks to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for stepping up to lead the investigation at a time of crushing grief.”

The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and BCI “to investigate the officer-involved critical incident. This case is active and ongoing,” the attorney general said.

Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno called the deputy’s killing “devastating.”

“I’m keeping Deputy Daniel Sherrer’s family and the entire community in my prayers, and am grateful for our law enforcement officers across Ohio,” he wrote in a post on X.

This is the second fatal law enforcement-involved shooting BCI responded to overnight.

State agents were also summoned to Butler County in southwestern Ohio, where Middletown police shot and killed a man as they arrived to search a home in the 900 block of Garden Avenue.

A second person was hurt and taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, according to the county prosecutor.

Middletown is about halfway between Dayton and Cincinnati.
