The government is currently working on the "Tourist Route: The Paths of Pope Leo XIV," which will include sites in Lambayeque, La Libertad, Piura, and Callao regions, where the Supreme Pontiff was present during his nearly 40-year pastoral mission in Peru.

At a press conference, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon shared details about this new tourist circuit.

Similarly, the Cabinet member announced that a technical team from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) and the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPeru) has begun fieldwork in Lambayeque to gather information about the sites that will be part of this new route.

Likewise, on May 16, the project's first technical working group was established in the northern city of Chiclayo, Lambayeque region. In the coming days, this action will be replicated in Piura, La Libertad, and Callao regions.

Religious Sites that could be part of the Route

According to information provided by the head of Mincetur, two religious sites in Peru's northern La Libertad region have so far been considered for inclusion in the "Tourist Route: The Paths of Pope Leo XIV."

These are the Parish of Nuestra Señora de Monserrat (Our Lady of Montserrat) and the Archdiocesan Major Seminary of San Carlos and San Marcelo, both located in Trujillo province.

Parish of Nuestra Señora de Monserrat

Founded by then-Augustinian parish priest Robert Prevost in 1988, this parish is located on Avenida Santa Teresa s/n, Trujillo province.

It is part of the Southern Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Trujillo. The church is built with durable materials. It features a gable roof and a bell tower.

On its altar stands a large wooden crucifix depicting the crucified Christ; in front of it, a seated effigy of Our Lady of Montserrat, with the child Jesus also seated on her lap.

The current Bishop of Rome and highest authority of the Catholic Church carried out pastoral mission in this temple until 1999.

During those 11 years of priestly service, he formed a deep bond with the local community and is fondly remembered by the faithful, who highlight his great charisma and tireless efforts to bring and strengthen Christian faith among the most vulnerable communities.

Archdiocesan Major Seminary of San Carlos and San Marcelo

This is the largest priestly formation center in Peru, home to the Faculty of Theology. It is located at kilometer 555 of the Panamericana Norte Highway, in Moche district, Trujillo.

There, the current Pope Leo XIV was a professor of Canon Law between 1988 and 1998, director of studies, and also served as acting rector for one year.

As a reference in religious formation, he is fondly remembered by priests, deacons, seminarians, and religious authorities who highlight his charisma, leadership, solid ecclesiastical training, and full identification with economically disadvantaged communities.

Within the Archdiocesan Major Seminary, the new House of Spirituality was built, the first Marian Sanctuary of the Archdiocese of Trujillo dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

In this sanctuary, whose interior features a three-meter-tall oil painting on canvas of the Virgin of Guadalupe, various pastoral activities are held, including youth retreats for those preparing to receive First Communion and Confirmation, bishops' gatherings, and more.
