Going for a triple-header with my previous articles on retro-styled video games that I’d like to see developed from older media properties (which, again, is a lot of fun), I have brand-new ideas involving even more IPs that I think would make for some really entertaining titles. The following are my latest selection of franchises that are tailor-made for video game tie-ins – or, where applicable, might need arguably better game tie-ins than what they already have.

10. Bionic Six

Image of Bionic Six courtesy of Ron Friedman and IMDB

Taking a similar direction to my idea for a video game based on Captain Planet featured in my first article in this subseries, this game would task players with selecting one of six members of the titular Bionic Six to find and locate the other five members after having been kidnapped by each of main villain Dr. Scarab’s five lackeys: Glove, Madam-O, Chopper, Mechanic, and Klunk. And much like my proposed concept for a hypothetical Captain Planet game, it would be effectively presented (and formatted) as an “exploration adventure” game in the same vein as Simon’s Quest or Radical Rescue.

9. The Maxx

Adapting the earlier (but already quite surreal) issues of Sam Kieth’s cult-favorite comic The Maxx, this video game would be styled as an action-platformer/beat-’em-up hybrid interspersed with more narrative-focused “visual novel” segments that delve deeper into the main characters’ fractured psyches. For extra distinction, I suggest a “mixed media” approach to emulate the purposely clashing style(s) utilized in the animated Maxx series that ran on MTV in 1995; likewise, if legally possible, it would be fun to include cameos from other Image Comics characters who showed up in The Maxx.

8. The Catillac [sic] Cats

Taking the characters originally created by Jean Chalopin and Bruno Bianchi for the 1984 animated Heathcliff series (but keeping Heathcliff separate if legally necessary), I imagine a basic platformer starring main characters Riff-Raff, Hector, Wordsworth, and Mungo. The video game is essentially built around switching between the four main cats in a similar format to The Lost Vikings and The Lost Vikings 2, with a primary focus on having to utilize and combine each of their different abilities.

7. Phantasm

Image of Phantasm courtesy of PopHorror and Sony Pictures

As a major fan of the wildly bizarre Phantasm film series (barring the much later – and disappointing – Ravager) since catching the first three movies on cable in the 1990s, I always wondered what a potential video game tie-in would look like. In general, I see the game fashioned as a purposeful visual and mechanical throwback to older 32-bit horror games like the original Resident Evil, but in the particular style of Evil Dead: Hail to the King (albeit with a much more serious and surreal tone).

6. BraveStarr

Despite having a (very simple and underwhelming) shooter video game release for the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, and ZX Spectrum, I feel like the BraveStarr franchise – while not necessarily the biggest 1980s cartoon series – deserved a more fun and exciting tie-in. To address this, I’d suggest a game directly emulating the style and design of the cartoon while also incorporating the characters and story into a co-op “shooting gallery” infusing elements from Wild Guns and Lethal Enforcers II.

5. He-Man / She-Ra: Masters of the Universe

While the original He-Man & the Masters of the Universe TV series had a few video game tie-ins for home computers back in the 1980s (and a random handheld entry for iOS and Android released in 2012/2013), a genuinely well-crafted game has yet to grace the franchise. Here, I’d recommend a co-op beat-’em-up/hack-and-slash hybrid based on the 1983 animated series and mixing key elements from Golden Axe and Gauntlet Legends, subsequently allowing up to four players to select the 1980s versions of He-Man, Teela, She-Ra, and Bow to fight the combined legions of Skeletor and Hordak.

4. Red Dwarf

Image of Red Dwarf Cast courtesy of Grant Naylor and BBC

Here, I’d take the fan-favorite British sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf and develop a comedic “graphic adventure” video game (again, like Maniac Mansion or The Secret of Monkey Island) based around interacting with the titular spaceship and its small but colorful crew (effectively remaking and greatly expanding on a previous text adventure game for DOS). Gameplay would primarily focus on having conversations and solving puzzles via dialogue trees and a “point-and-click” interface, with multiple events and plotlines adapted from various episodes in the first five seasons airing from 1988 to 1992.

3. Stunt Dawgs

Since I’m probably one of the very few people who remember this property (and might also be certifiably insane), I’d like to see a video game based on the short-lived 1992 animated series Stunt Dawgs [sic] just for the sake of dragging it back into the public’s view. Much like my previous idea for an adaptation of Jayce & the Wheeled Warriors, I imagine this game being presented as a vehicle combat title (again, like Rock n’ Roll RacingOutlander, or Twisted Metal), with up to four players given the choice of 12 different characters: the six heroic Stunt Dawgs and six villainous Stunt Scabs.

2. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

And since I also wouldn’t miss another chance for a recursive “cross-cultural” adaptation, I propose an official 2D Super Mario Bros. video game based on the animated segments of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! from 1989. While the game would largely play like (and be directly structured after) Mario Bros. and Mario Bros. 2, the stages would now be based on episodes parodying various movies and other fiction, with each ending on boss fights with a different version of “King Koopa.”

1. Robot Carnival

Image of Robot Carnival courtesy of IMDB

I’m probably being way too ambitious here, but one of my all-time favorite movies is the 1987 Japanese anthology Robot Carnival, having fallen in love with the animated feature since seeing it frequently on the Sci-Fi Channel back in the 1990s. I’d like to take Robot Carnival and adapt all eight of its segments into a sort of “genre roulette” that provides differing gameplay structures fitting each story’s style: for example, the action-oriented short “Deprive” would play like an arcade brawler (or something like Strider), while the drama-focused “Presence” would probably work as a visual novel.

Yankees' 'left-handed Aaron Judge' is primed for MLB call-up

Referring to any non-Aaron Judge player as "Aaron Judge" in one form or another is less of a moniker and more of a title, one that merits defending. Up until June, this is one title that Yankees minor leaguer Spencer Jones didn’t quite live up to. Dubbed the "left-handed Aaron Judge" thanks to his immense power, Jones had only matched (and exceeded) one of the many aspects of Judge's game (besides the 6-foot-7 height): the sky-high strikeout totals. Last season, Jones hit .259/.366/.452 with 17 home runs in 482 at-bats. His unexciting stat line was accompanied by a staggering 200 strikeouts, a Yankees’ minor league record. The main issue with Jones' performance was that his power was robbed of its potential due to his inability to make contact. To start 2025, it was looking like the same story. Jones was bumped from MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list to start the year, found himself whiffing at an unchanged pace and watched as his trade value declined with his poor numbers. Then, in June, everything changed. Squabbling to a .214 average in Double-A as recently as June 11, he would quickly catch fire, bringing his lowly batting average up to .274 by June 26. He was then promoted to Triple-A, where he is hitting to a staggering .386/.463/.795 stat line with five home runs in just 11 games. His strikeouts are still off-putting (15), but Jones is now giving us a glimpse of his massive potential. On the year across both levels of the minors, Jones is hitting .297/.405/.635 in 214 at-bats. His 21 home runs this season are already a career high in fewer than half the at-bats it took him to reach his previous career high of 17. In addition, he has stolen 14 bases in 16 attempts. On the verge of posting career highs all across the board, Jones is looking more than ready for his MLB debut, though with a crowded outfield of Judge, Cody Bellinger, Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham, squeezing him onto the roster presents a challenge. Nonetheless, hitting at his current pace, there is no way the Yankees can ignore him.

'The Canadiens have more than enough assets to get Jordan Kyrou'

Three days ago, Maxime Truman wrote that Jordan Kyrou would agree to be traded to Montreal, as he now has a no-trade clause in his contract. That’s a game-changer, because we know that the Habs are very interested in the St. Louis Blues’ forward. And we also know that Kyrou would bring a lot to the Habs, especially at five-on-five. And he would fill a lot of the Montreal club’s need for a top-6 forward. Ivan Demidov would be much better surrounded by him. In short, we also know that the Blues are asking for established players in return: they don’t want to rebuild. And according to Pierre McGuire, who spoke to TSN 690, the Canadiens have a lot of assets to secure his services. It remains to be seen whether the Habs are willing to part with these assets to acquire Kyrou. Mike Matheson would be the most logical main piece of the lot, as it would be very surprising if Kent Hughes touched his core to add value to the return. What’s more, the Blues would like to improve their defensive brigade. Matheson isn’t indispensable, and with the acquisition of Noah Dobson, the Habs would still have a fine defensive brigade. It would also leave room for Jayden Struble and Arber Xhekaj to make their mark. And let’s not forget guys like Adam Engstrom and William Trudeau, who are still very young and could surprise many in the near future as left-handed defensemen. But what could the Habs offer (in addition to Matheson) to make it more interesting for the Blues? It’s safe to assume that the Blues will have offers from other teams for Kyrou, so Montreal needs to stand out from the crowd. There’s always the option of adding prospects/draft picks to fine-tune the deal, but you have to stay within the Blues’ demands. Would they be interested in a guy like Alex Newhook? Hard to say. Maybe a Kirby Dach? Once again, the real question is whether the Habs are interested in parting with established players to improve their top-6. With what Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton have done since the start of their reign, Habs fans can have confidence in them. Overtime – Tristan Jarry could certainly interest a few clubs. – Ryan Reaves has a lot on his mind about his time in Toronto. – If you go to Mark Masters’ page, you’ll find even more comments from Reaves on the Maple Leafs, but also on the city itself. – Interesting.

Yankees' trade-deadline plans must include these two infielders

Yankees' trade-deadline plans must include these two infielders

As the July 31 MLB trade deadline approaches, the New York Yankees are shopping for everything from bullpen and rotation additions to infield help. Regarding the latter, two infielders are clearly the best options: Minnesota Twins infielder/outfielder Willi Castro and Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Willi Castro Castro is a perfect fit for the Yankees. The 28-year-old switch hitter’s .266/.359/.432 slash line slots perfectly into the bottom third of the Yankees’ lineup — and maybe even the leadoff spot. Plus, he’s extra motivated to continue putting together the best season of his career, as he’s a free agent in 2026. What’s most attractive about Castro for the Yankees is that he can take over the shortstop position from the largely ineffective Anthony Volpe (.215/.290/.387). Also, his ability to play outfield would allow the Yankees to trade Trent Grisham — another over-performing upcoming free agent — for a third baseman or a pitching staff upgrade. Eugenio Suarez The Yankees are in desperate need of a third baseman. Currently, they’re riding with Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas. An unproven rookie, Vivas has hit just .151/.219/.252 in limited playing time. Peraza showcased his offensive ineptitude with a nearly disastrous pop out on a bunt attempt in the 10th inning of the Bombers’ come-from-behind win against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. The obvious upgrade choice is Suarez. In the middle of a monster power year, putting up a 138 OPS+ with 29 homers and 75 RBI, he’s also motivated by his looming 2026 free agency. What’s more, his career splits show that he’s at his best in the second half (.262/.339/.486 compared to .241/.325/.446 in the first half). Trade rumors have also connected the Yankees to the likes of Colorado’s Ryan McMahon (82 OPS+) and Pittsburgh’s Isiah Kiner-Falefa (80 OPS+) and Ke’Bryan Hayes (64 OPS+). None of them are hitting well enough to justify a trade — even as a consolation prize if another team swoops in and grabs up Suarez. So, when Yankees GM Brian Cashman looks to strengthen his infield, he should focus his efforts on Castro and Suarez. If Cashman can find a way to grab them along with a couple of bullpen pieces and a front-of-the-rotation starter, the Yankees will be perfectly positioned to atone for their 2024 World Series flop.

Pistons Emerge as Potential Landing Spot For Former Raptors Champion

The Detroit Pistons have already made multiple moves this summer to upgrade their roster but more moves could be coming as they try to compete for a top seed in the weakened Eastern Conference next season. Of course, the Pistons are coming off a season in which they completed a historic franchise turnaround by making the playoffs after finishing with the NBA’s worst record the prior two seasons. Detroit has built out a solid core mixed with veteran and young talent led by Cade Cunningham, who had a breakout campaign last season. The Pistons entered the offseason looking to upgrade their roster and they have done that by signing Caris LeVert and acquiring Duncan Robinson from the Miami Heat via a sign-and-trade. Detroit has lost multiple players as well during free agency as they sent Dennis Schroder to the Sacramento Kings via a sign-and-trade while Tim Hardaway Jr. signed with the Denver Nuggets. For the Pistons, they still have some areas to improve on their roster and they have recently been linked to a former Toronto Raptors champion. According to Forbes’ Evan Sidery, the Pistons are among the teams who have checked in on Chris Boucher who has generated some interest in free agency as a potential player a contender can sign on a veteran’s minimum. Boucher has been with the Raptors since the 2018-19 season and while he did not play a large role for them during their championship run that season, he has had a larger role since then. Last season, the 32-year-old forward averaged 10.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game while shooting 49.2% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range. Boucher is a solid scorer who would help the Pistons space the floor due to his outside shooting abilities and he is also a great shot blocker for his size. Despite this, the Pistons will likely have to beat out multiple other contenders to sign him this offseason, though he would be an upgrade to their second unit.
