“Lauren is one of the most exceptional artists I’ve ever had the privilege of working with as a teacher. There’s this still, quiet confidence surrounding her presence that you can see in her work. Not only is she unashamedly herself, but she uses her own creative vision in such a unique way to explore parts of herself, and share these parts with the world. And the world needs to meet Lauren Vanderplas. The first short film Lauren made in my Art of Film/TV class was about two cans of beans falling in love, before one was tragically opened and used for dinner, while the other can watched in silent horror. It was hilarious, a bit absurd, somewhat sad, but honest. This has been the case with all of her work, with increasing clarity as she’s grown more confident in her style and her art.” — Bishop Rhone-Pratt, Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts

Ziyun (Eva) Zhu

“I have witnessed her development as an artist, person, and leader in and out of the classroom. She is passionate about giving back to her community, school, and family, using her photography talents. Eva is responsible, independent, and passionate. She is very self-motivated, with an innate sense of curiosity and drive. …(H)er ideas demonstrate she has already put in the hard work of self-discovery and personal reflection. Many students skip this step – looking outward for easy inspiration and answers, but fail to make personal connections to their inner passions and experiences. I see this as one of Eva’s greatest strengths, her ability to be self-motivated and take the classroom content as a starting point, not an end goal to check off.” — Anna Bloomfield, Crean Lutheran High School
