Trump cries ‘hoax’ as Biden and DeSantis survey hurricane damage

Former President Donald Trump attacked the Biden administration Wednesday in Miami for “destroying the rule of law,” just hours after President Joe Biden and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) surveyed the fallout from Hurricane Ian near Fort Myers, Florida.

Trump, speaking at the America First Hispanic Leadership Conference, accused Biden of turning the country into a “land of recession and probably depression” and weaponizing the Department of Justice’s espionage investigation into him.

“You probably read and heard about the document hoaxes. Anyone hear about the document hoax? Helicopters flying over Mar-a-Lago?” Trump riffed to the crowd. “They raided and broke into my home. Everyone knows we’ve done nothing wrong. They’re targeting me because they want to silence me, silence you, and silence our amazing ‘Make America Great Again’ movement.”

Later in his remarks, Trump complained that the FBI had raided Mar-a-Lago rather than targeting Mexican drug cartels.

“They spend all their time on nonsense and horrible things, raiding Mar-a-Lago. ‘Let’s go raid Mar-a-Lago’ but leave the cartels alone,” the former president grieved. “They raided Mar-a-Lago, but the cartels, they have their own Mar-a-Lagos, and those are fine.”

Trump’s legal team is asking the Supreme Court to intervene and block the DOJ from continuing its criminal investigation using roughly 100 allegedly classified documents seized from Mar-a-Lago. Trump’s lawyers delivered the request to Justice Clarence Thomas, who set an Oct. 11 deadline for the DOJ to respond to Trump’s request.

With the midterm elections approaching, Biden has ratcheted up rhetoric painting Trump and “MAGA Republicans” as threats to democracy, but he largely avoided politics Wednesday while with DeSantis.

“Today, we have one job and only one job, and that’s to make sure the people of Florida get everything they need to fully, thoroughly recover,” Biden said. “This is about America coming together.”
